Get to Know Us
At Washington Presbyterian Church, we believe faith is meant to be lived together. For over 200 years, our community in the heart of Corryton has gathered in Christ’s name to worship, serve, and grow in grace—through every season, in every kind of space.
Our roots run deep, and our welcome is wide. We’re a church that believes in tables—Communion tables, potluck tables, and conversation tables—because we believe everyone is already known and loved by God. Whether you’ve been in church all your life or you’re just beginning to ask questions, you are welcome here. You won’t be a stranger for long.
We’re connected: to God in Christ, to each other, and to the world through meaningful service. We believe the gospel is good news for everyone, and we strive to live it out—with generosity, justice, and compassion.
We’re not flashy. But we are faithful.
We’re the kind of church where people will pray for you and bring you soup. We read Scripture together, sing with heart, and trust the Spirit to move. We don’t have all the answers, but we have each other—and a God who never stops loving or leading.
So if you’re looking for a place to ask, belong, heal, serve, or simply breathe—you’ve found one.
Come as you are. Let’s walk this road together.
Who We Are
At Washington Presbyterian Church, we believe God is still drawing the circle wider. Rooted in the love of Jesus Christ, we are a Spirit-led community connected to God in joyful worship, to one another through shared life and sacrifice, and to our neighbors through service and compassion.
We gather in Corryton not just to be a church in the community, but a church for the community—where all are named, known, and welcomed at the table. Whether around potlucks, in worship, or out in the neighborhood, we seek to embody Christ’s love in real and tangible ways, trusting that God’s abundance is enough for everyone. Here, no one is forgotten, and every story matters.

How Can
We Help You Today?

Why We’re Here
Our outreach flows from our love of God and our commitment to love our neighbors as ourselves. Following the way of Jesus Christ, we believe faith is lived out through concrete acts of care—feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, welcoming the stranger, and showing up with compassion. At Washington Presbyterian Church, outreach is not optional or transactional; it is a faithful response to God’s grace and a living expression of our baptismal calling to love all people, without exception.
We intentionally support a mission presence—locally, regionally, and globally. This includes financial giving, hands-on service, and spiritual accompaniment. We walk with others in their sorrow and in their joy, physically, spiritually, and emotionally supporting their needs. Whether it’s stocking a pantry, writing a check, or showing up for someone in crisis, our outreach reflects Christ’s call to be present with one another in love.
Through our Mission and Outreach budget, we support:

At Washington Pres, we take our baptismal vows seriously—loving, supporting, and valuing all people as we nurture faith, belonging, and justice across generations. We believe investing in young people is an investment in the Church and in the world God so deeply loves. Our outreach isn’t a program. It’s who we are. It’s how we live the gospel.
Session
At Washington Presbyterian Church, we believe faith shows up in how we care for others. Our mission and outreach ministries are how we live out Christ’s call to love our neighbors—in Corryton and beyond. Whether it’s supporting local schools, partnering with food and housing ministries, showing up with meals and prayers, or giving generously to global mission efforts, we believe God’s love is meant to be embodied in practical, compassionate ways. We don’t serve to make a name for ourselves—we serve because that’s who Jesus is, and that’s who we’re called to be. There’s always room for more hands and hearts. Come be part of the work.

What is a Session?
In the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Session is the spiritual leadership team of the congregation. It’s made up of ruling elders—members of the church who have been called, elected, and ordained to lead alongside the pastor.
Together, the Session discerns how God is calling the church to grow in faith, service, and mission. They oversee everything from worship and education to building use, stewardship, and outreach. But more than that, they are shepherds of the people—praying, listening, encouraging, and helping to guide the congregation with wisdom and compassion.
Our elders serve for a set term, and their leadership is rooted in humility, Scripture, and love for the church. Decisions are made not by any one person, but together—in community, through prayer and conversation—always seeking to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
You don’t have to be on Session to be a leader in this church, but if you ever want to talk with someone about what’s happening, where we’re headed, or how to get involved, a Session member is a great place to start.

Our Story: A Legacy of Faith in Grassy Valley
Faith took root in Knox County alongside the earliest pioneers, and with the arrival of Scotch-Irish settlers—many from Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky—the Presbyterian Church found a home in this valley. These descendants of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians settled in what was then called “Grassy Valley,” a fertile stretch of land just outside what would become the city of Knoxville. Among them were faithful souls who sought to organize a congregation in their new wilderness home.
On September 6, 1802, under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Carrick—President of Blount College, forerunner to the University of Tennessee—the “sundry inhabitants of Upper Grassy Valley” were officially organized into a church by the newly formed Union Presbytery. They named it Washington, presumably in honor of George Washington, who had passed away just a year and a half before. This makes Washington Church the fourth oldest Presbyterian church in Knox County and one of the earliest faith communities in the region.

Weekly Bulletins & Pastor Lyn’s Corner
Our weekly bulletin is more than just an order of worship—it’s a snapshot of our life together. Inside, you’ll find details about upcoming events, opportunities to serve, and ways to get connected. Whether you’re a longtime member or visiting for the first time, the bulletin helps you feel at home and stay in the loop.
Each week, Pastor Lyn shares a brief reflection—a word of encouragement, a story from the week, a theological insight, or just something real from the heart. It’s one more way we stay grounded in faith and connected to one another. Take a look at Pastor Lyn’s Corner and let it be a small moment of grace in your week.

It’s worth noting: the road was named Washington Pike after the church, not the other way around. We’re Washington Presbyterian Church—not “Washington Pike Presbyterian”—a distinction that reminds us our roots run deep in this land and community.
Soon after its organization, the church called its first pastor, the Rev. Isaac Anderson, a gifted preacher and visionary educator who would go on to found nearby Maryville College. Though our membership was never large, the faith of this congregation took hold and grew strong, becoming a witness to Christ not only in Grassy Valley but throughout the surrounding countryside.
